What makes us different

We own our tarmac machines. Most firms hire theirs.

Ask any driveway company whose machine is turning up on the day. Most of them are hiring plant by the week, or subbing the surfacing out to a gang they met last month. We run our own mini and midi tarmac laying machines, and our own rollers, with our own operators on them.

  • The date is ours to set. No waiting on a hire yard or a subcontractor's diary before your drive gets laid.
  • Machine laid, not barrowed and raked. A paver gives an even mat and a consistent depth across the whole surface.
  • Mini and midi sizes. Small enough for a domestic drive and a tight side access, big enough for a car park.
  • The same operators every time. The men on the machine are ours, so the standard does not change job to job.

What we do

Groundworks first, surfacing second

We are a groundworks contractor that surfaces, not a paving gang that digs. Everything below is work we do all week for councils, developers and commercial clients, and the same crews do the domestic jobs.

Tarmac driveway with block paved edge course at a semi detached house
01

Tarmac Driveways

Machine laid and rolled hot on a properly dug base, finished with a block or kerb edge course. The surface most Yorkshire drives should have.

02

Access Roads & Estates

Shared drives, private lanes and full residential development access, built to carry delivery lorries rather than just a family car.

03

Car Parks & Commercial

Surfacing, kerbing, drainage and bay marking for councils, commercial sites and parking courts. Priced and programmed properly.

04

Highway & Streetworks

NRSWA certified, so we can work on the adopted public highway. Crossings, dropped kerbs and reinstatements done legally, by us.

Paved terrace and retaining brickwork on a Leeds waterside development
05

Patios & Hard Landscaping

Paved terraces, retaining brickwork, steps and levels. Set out and built off the same base detail as everything else we lay.

Tarmac yard surfacing laid around existing drainage gullies
06

Drainage & Groundworks

Excavation, levels, gullies, channel drains and soakaways. The water is dealt with before a single tonne of tarmac goes down.

How we build it

The part you never see is the part we are known for

A driveway does not fail at the surface. It fails underneath, months later, because somebody saved a day on the digging. Groundworks is our first trade, so this is where our job actually starts.

  1. L 01

    Dig out to formation

The old surface and the soft ground beneath it come out and go on the wagon. Nothing gets raked to the side and buried under your new drive.

  2. L 02

    Formation checked and consolidated

We look at what we have actually dug down to before anything goes back in. Soft spots get dug deeper, not covered over and hoped for.

  3. L 03

    Sub-base, compacted in layers

Stone laid and rolled in layers rather than tipped in one thick lift. This is the layer that carries the load, and it is built to the depth the job needs.

  4. L 04

    Edges, kerbs and drainage

Edge restraints and kerbs set and haunched, gullies and channels tied in, and falls set so the water runs where it should before we surface.

  5. L 05

    Surface course, machine laid

Tarmac laid hot through our own paver for an even mat, then rolled while it is still up to temperature. Depth to suit the traffic it will take.

  6. L 06

    Swept, checked and handed over

Site cleared, arisings taken away and the finished surface walked with you before the wagons leave.

Tarmac laid to falls around a manhole cover and gully in a rear yard, Sheffield
Levels, falls and ironwork, Sheffield A rear yard surfaced around existing gullies and covers. The manhole and the drainage grate finish flush with the tarmac and the falls run to them, which is groundworks work rather than surfacing work.

Both trades on one ticket. Because we do the groundworks and the surfacing ourselves, there is nobody to blame when the levels are wrong, and nobody waiting on somebody else to finish before they can start.

Forty households and clients have written it down
